Rome – The Italian Minister of Defence, Lorenzo Guerini, visited today the Headquarters of EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI in Rome, accompanied by  the Italian Chief of Defence, General Enzo Vecciarelli, and the Commander of the Italian Joints Operations Command (COI – where the EU OHQ is located), General Luciano Portolano. The Minister was welcomed by the Operation Commander, Rear Admiral Fabio Agostini, and a representative of the OHQ international staff. During the visit, RearAdmiral Agostini illustrated the activities and the first tangible results of the Operation that currently involves more than 20 European member States.

Honourable Guerini underlined: “Operation IRINI has a very important political task and it testifies what Europe can do to deal with the Libyan crisis. As the High Representative Borrell often says, IRINI is not the solution to the problem but an important part of the solution. Operation IRINI started its activities at sea only at the beginning of May but has already achieved positive results and is an important contribution to the path started with the Berlin Conference for pacification and stabilization in Libya. I thank Admiral Agostini for conducting the activities and I thank also all the military personnel of the other contributing Member States that I see here today”.
