25 Years of UNSCR 1325 – Women, Peace and Security with EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI, committed to contributing to the peace and stabilization of Libya and to guaranteeing maritime security in the Mediterranean, underlines that peace and gender equality are an integral part of the daily work.

Since the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325, on 31 October 2000, it has become clear that lasting peace cannot be built without the full and equal participation of all, regardless of gender. From the beginning, Operation IRINI, through the personnel operating on its naval, air and logistical assets and at the Operational Headquarters, in Rome, and the Force Headquarters, embarked on the flag ship, has demonstrated that only by working as a unique crew, without distinction, significant progress and important results can be achieved.

Today, gender equality is not just a goal but also a fundamental condition for effective action. All of us work side by side at all levels to prevent conflict, ensure security, and rebuild communities. Our collective work for peace is a daily reality.

Operation IRINI recognizes that the true strength of the WPS Agenda lies in its ability to connect people of diverse backgrounds and roles:

Cooperation at various levels: governments, international organizations, and local communities work together. Implementing national action plans, supporting institutions, and strengthening rights are the result of a collaborative effort among many partners.

Crossing boundaries: By including everyone, regardless of gender, in discussions and actions for peace, the WPS Agenda transcends the divisions that often underlie conflict. It demonstrates that cooperation and mutual understanding are more powerful tools than prejudice.

Equality as a principle of action: Instead of treating gender equality as an afterthought, the WPS Agenda places it at the heart of peace efforts. This means that all team members – whether they work in the field or at a desk – are equal and have an equally important contribution to the final success.

Despite these achievements, challenges remain that require further cooperation. The 25th anniversary is an opportunity, also for EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI, to recall that peace and security are not a matter for one gender, but for society as a whole. This is a moment to re-engage in our collective efforts, remembering that the daily efforts of each of us, based on the principles of equality and mutual respect, bring us closer to achieving lasting and inclusive peace.
