VISIT OF THE CHIEF OF DEFENCE OF THE REPUBLIC OF LATVIA AT EUNAVFOR MED OPERATION IRINI HEADQUARTERS

On the 24th of November, Rear Admiral Marco CASAPIERI, Operation Commander of EUNAVFOR MED IRINI (OPCDR), had the honour to officially receive at the Operational Headquarters in Rome the Chief of Defence of the Latvian Armed Forces, Major General Kaspars PUDĀNS.

At the beginning of the visit, Major General PUDĀNS was welcomed by the OPCDR and had the opportunity to meet representatives of the multinational staff, expressing appreciation for their commitment and professionalism in carrying out the operation’s objectives.

The distinguished Latvian guest was then provided with a comprehensive briefing on the current operational context and IRINI’s five core tasks. Particular emphasis was placed on the implementation of the UN arms embargo on Libya, the fight against illicit trafficking, and the development of Capacity Building and Training initiatives for Libyan maritime authorities. The briefing also highlighted Operation IRINI’s enhanced role in ensuring Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) and supporting the protection of critical maritime infrastructure in the Central Mediterranean.

During the visit, Major General PUDĀNS toured the Joint Operations Centre, where he received an update on the operational situation in the Area of Operations, and engaged in detailed discussions with OHQ divisions on ongoing activities, future developments, and opportunities for cooperation.

The visit of the Chief of Defence of the Latvian Armed Forces reaffirmed Latvia’s strong and steady support for Operation IRINI and for shared maritime security in the Mediterranean. It was an excellent occasion to strengthen ties with a contributing Member State and to underline the importance of collective efforts to safeguard EU interests in the region.
