Visit of the Austrian National Defence Committee to EUNAVFOR MED IRINI’s Operational Headquarters

A delegation of the Austrian National Defence Committee, led by Chairman MP Volker Reifenberger and accompanied by several Members of the Austrian Parliament, visited the Headquarters of EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI in Rome. The delegation was welcomed by the Operation Commander, Rear Admiral (UH) Marco Casapieri, who presented an in‑depth briefing on the state of play of the Operation, its evolution, and its strategic contribution to security in the Mediterranean.

The programme included a visit to the Joint Operations Centre (JOC), where the Austrian representatives observed the real‑time operational work carried out by IRINI’s multinational staff. The delegation gained a clearer understanding of how the operation monitors maritime activities, supports the implementation of international mandates, and contributes to regional stability through continuous situational awareness.

Throughout the discussions, particular attention was given to IRINI’s broader strategic role. The Operation safeguards EU interests in the Mediterranean through credible protection and deterrence and contributes to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions in support of peace and stability in Libya. These efforts form an essential component of the EU’s integrated approach to security and stability in the Mediterranean region.

The visit also offered an opportunity for a national meeting with Austrian personnel serving within the OHQ, allowing the delegation to acknowledge their commitment and discuss their experience within the Operation’s multinational framework.

The exchange provided a valuable opportunity to reaffirm the shared EU commitment to strengthening maritime security, fostering stability, and upholding international law in the Central Mediterranean.
