EUNAVFOR MED OPERATION IRINI

LIEUTENANT GENERAL FRANCESCO PAOLO FIGLIUOLO, ITALIAN COMMANDER FOR JOINT OPERATIONS, VISITED EUNAVFORMED OPERATION IRINI OHQ

Lieutenant General Francesco Paolo FIGLIUOLO, Commander of Italian Command for Joint Operations and Special Commissioner for Reconstruction, visited yestarday EUNAVFOR MED IRINI OHQ.

Welcomed by the IRINI Operation Commander, Rear Admiral Stefano TURCHETTO, he received a detailed briefing on the State of Play of the Operation, and on the results achieved.

As part of the wider European Integrated Approach to Libya, IRINI is a military maritime security operation deployed under the EU Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). It operates in the Central Mediterranean to prevent the illicit flow of arms and related materiel to Libya, thereby promoting stability and supporting the ongoing peace process.

The meeting with Lt. General FIGLIUOLO provided a great opportunity to share views with the Commander of the Italian IRINI Parent Operation Headquarters on the EU challenges in the Mediterranean and the coordinated international efforts to facilitate Libya’s progress towards peace and development.

The tour ended with a visit to the Joint Operation Centre (JOC), the operational heart of IRINI, from where all the activities are monitored.
