The Secretary General of the Irish Department of Defence, Ms. Jacqui McCrum, while on a personal travel to Rome, visited today the EU Naval Force in Mediterranean Operation IRINI Headquarters.
The Operation Commander Stefano Turchetto and Ms. McCrum shared their views on the situation and the threats to the security in the Central Mediterranean Area. The visit ended in the Joint Operation Centre (JOC), the operational heart of the headquarters, from where the activities are planned, conducted and controlled.
The visit reaffirmed the importance of the close relationship between Ireland and Operation IRINI. Collectively 23 EU member states are currently supporting the Operation with personnel and assets and Ireland is giving the Operation an important contribution thanks to the Irish personnel deployed in OHQ.
The Secretary General of the Irish Department of Defence met the Irish personnel deployed in the IRINI Headquarters and thanked them for their service for their Country and for Europe.
