On August 1st 2021, at the Forward Operating Base of Sigonella, took place the handover/takeover ceremony of the Commander and the entire contingent of Poland. At the presence of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland in Italy, H.E. Mrs Anna Maria Anders, and the OpCommander of EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, Rear Admiral Fabio Agostini, Commander Marcin Rzonca tookover on Commander Miroslaw Jaros. In her speech, H.E. Mrs Anna Maria Anders stressed that “For Poland, the commitment and participation in Operation IRINI, beautiful and meaningful name since it means “peace” in Greek, is very important. Our involvement in this mission, led by Admiral Fabio Agostini and in which 65 Polish soldiers take part, is a sign of solidarity and fulfillment of our commitments as allies within the EU. The Polish side is aware of the importance of stability in the Mediterranean basin for the maintenance of an adequate level of security both in the region and throughout Europe”. “Poland is one of 24 EU Member States contributing to IRINI. We have tackled many challenges and yet many others will come. But I know that I can count on Poland and the other Member States to continue to fulfil IRINI’s mandate with the highest degree of professionalism”, has concluded Rear Admiral Agostini.
