Brigadier General Jean Philippe Leroux, EUMS Operations Director, visited EUNAVFOR MED IRINI OHQ

Today the Operations Director of the EU Military Staff (EUMS), Brigadier General Jean Philippe Leroux, visited EUNAVFOR MED IRINI Operation Headquarters in Rome and met with the Operation Commander, Rear Admiral Stefano Turchetto.

The Brigadier General appreciated IRINI’s commitment to support the implementation of the United Nations arms embargo in Libya, the prevention of the illegal export of crude oil and the disruption of the business model of human smuggling.

IRINI is a military maritime security Operation carried out under the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) deployed in the Central Mediterranean to promote stability and support the ongoing peace process as part of the wider European Integrated Approach to Libya.

Brigadier Leroux and Rear Admiral Stefano Turchetto shared respective visions on EU challenges and opportunities in the Mediterranean and the North African area.

During the event, the Brigadier General visited the Joint Operation Centre (JOC), the operational heart of the Headquarters, from where all the activities are controlled.
