First training course for Libyan personnel as part of the Capacity Building &Training task of the EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI

On 26 September 2025, the Operation IRINI Commander, Rear Admiral Marco CASAPIERI, awarded with the certificate of completion the Libyan military personnel who participated in the first training course organized by the EUNAVFOR MED IRINI as part of the Capacity Building and Training (CB&T) task for Libyan maritime institutions, assigned to the Operation by the EU mandate.

This two-week program, planned at EU Member States’ training and education centers, took place at the Italian Navy Training Center in Taranto, bringing together Libyan Navy personnel both from the east and west of the country, marking a significant milestone in the EU’s commitment to supporting Libya.

The CB&T course was designed in line with internationally recognized standards, emphasizing international law and human rights. Participants received training in areas such as basic and advanced firefighting, damage control and safety procedures, release of hazardous substances response. The curriculum focused on developing professional conduct and adherence to international norms, providing broad-based knowledge rather than training tied to prevent hazard and injuries when operating on board ship.

Operation IRINI plays a pivotal role in the European Union’s integrated approach to supporting Libya’s United Nations-led peace and stabilization process. By providing Capacity Building and Training initiatives promoted by the EU institutions and closely coordinated with EUDEL Libya, the Operation contributes to the development of the Libyan maritime institutions according to international standards. This support aligns with the EU’s broader objectives of fostering peace and stability in the Mediterranean region.

The successful completion of this first CB&T course underscores the European Union’s efforts to support Libya’s unity, stability, and sovereignty. EUNAVFOR MED Operation IRINI reflects the European Union’s determination to safeguard peace, uphold international law and promote stability in a region of strategic importance for the interests of the EU such as the Mediterranean.
