Visit of the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to EUNAVFOR MED IRINI’s Operational Headquarters

A delegation from the Slovak Republic, led by H.E. Mr. Peter KMEC, Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to the Italian Republic, visited the Headquarters of Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI in Rome.

The Ambassador and his delegation were welcomed by the Operation Commander, Rear Admiral (UH) Marco CASAPIERI, who provided a comprehensive briefing on the mission, its evolution, and IRINI’s strategic contribution to maritime security in the Central Mediterranean. The discussion highlighted the Operation’s role within the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy and its importance in safeguarding stability in a region increasingly affected by geopolitical tensions and hybrid threats.

During the visit, the delegation toured the Joint Operations Centre (JOC), where they observed the real‑time operational work conducted by IRINI’s multinational staff. This provided a first‑hand understanding of how the Operation monitors maritime activities, supports the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions, and maintains continuous maritime situational awareness across the Joint Operation Area.

The visit also offered an opportunity for a meeting with Slovak personnel serving within the OHQ. Ambassador KMEC expressed appreciation for their professionalism and commitment, acknowledging the value of Slovakia’s contribution to Operation IRINI’s multinational framework.

The exchange reaffirmed the shared commitment of the European Union and the Slovak Republic to strengthening maritime security, promoting stability, and upholding international law in the Mediterranean.
