Visit by the EUNAVFOR MED IRINI Operation Commander to the Task Force for End-of-Year appreciation
During the period from 21 to 23 December, the EUNAVFOR MED IRINI Operation Commander Rear Admiral Marco CASAPIERI carried out a series of activities to convey end-of-year greetings to the Task Force personnel. These included a visit on board HS ELLI, while in port at Souda, where the OPCDR addressed the entire crew during an assembly on the flight deck, and a VTC link with ITS Borsini. The OPCDR also met with personnel deployed at the operational and logistical bases in Souda and Sigonella, personally acknowledging their dedication and contributions throughout the year. These engagements provided an opportunity to personally thank all personnel for their professionalism, commitment, and dedication throughout a demanding year, which included the renewal of the Operation’s EU mandate, the expansion of its responsibilities with the addition of the Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA) task, the renewal of the inspection regime aimed at countering illicit arms trafficking to Libya (CIAT), the continuation of monitoring efforts to combat oil smuggling (COS) and disrupt the human smuggling business model (HSBM), as well as a strengthening of cooperation with Libyan institutions in the field of CB&T initiatives. Over the past year, all assigned tasks were successfully completed despite numerous challenges. This achievement was made possible thanks to the strong support of EU Member States and, above all, the high level of motivation, dedication, and teamwork demonstrated by the personnel.

During meetings with personnel, the OPCDR thanked everyone for their hard work and emphasized the value of their daily contribution. Special recognition was given to the flexibility, resilience, and sense of responsibility shown by staff members, which ensured continuity and effectiveness across all activities. Looking ahead, the OPCDR expressed confidence in the commitment of EU Member States and in the team’s ability to achieve even greater success in the coming year, noting that the Operation’s future remains bright thanks to the strong European spirit, motivation, and dedication of its personnel.
